Toda

Todas are one of the prominent tribal communities among all the six PVTGs. They
call themselves Tuduvar or Toda. Todas are divided into two endogamous sub-
castes, namely Tartar and Teivali. Demographic studies indicate that as of now
They have been distributed in 67munds. As per the Census 2011 the total number of
Todas stood at 1423. Community identification markers of todas are their shawl,
called Putkuli, turban and the women’s hairstyle anti-clockwise (ringlets). The
Todas are vegetarians and do not eat meat, eggs that can hatch, or fish in their
settlements. Kappottytwehrr (Jaggery) rice coconut rice and Hotvithor with
Tharspergy butter, ghee, milk, and curd are also important traditional recipes of
todas. All their economic activity is centered around their buffaloes. They made
various products from milk such as ghee, cheese, butter, curd etc.
